Curriculum

 

Students in the non-thesis track are required to complete 36 hours of study, and students in the research track (thesis) are required to complete 29 hours. Courses include seminars, mandatory, elective courses, and Practicum.

Students in the non-thesis track are required to prepare a final assignment based on their Practicum.

Some of the program's core courses include:

  • Climate Change  - Introduction to climate science (mandatory). Instructor: Professor Colin Price,  a leading climate scientist from TAU's Department of Earth Sciences; former Head of TAU's Porter School of Environmental Studies. Online course (students watch pre-recorded lectures at their leisure), designed for graduate students with little or no formal science education. Note: the course includes three in-class in person meetings with Professor Price, and weekly sessions with a Teaching Assistant.

  • Climate Policy - Prof. Alon Tal, Department of Public Policy, former Member of the Israeli Knesset, author of Pollution in a Promised Land: An Environmental History of Israel (UC Berkeley 2002); The Land Is Full: Addressing Overpopulation in Israel (Yale University Press 2016) and Making Climate Tech Work (Island Publishing 2024).

  • Changing the Intellectual Climate - A stimulating seminar on the political ecology of the climate crisis. Dr. Miri Lavie-Neeman, Affiliated with the Arava Institute of Environmental Studies and University of California Berkeley.    

  • Climate Change and the Social Sciences (mandatory). How can the social sciences contribute to a better understanding of the social, political, economic and moral ramifications of climate change.  Professor Dan Rabinowitz, TAU, Head of the program, former Head of TAU's Porter School of Environmnetal Studies, Author of 'Here it Comes: How Do we Survive the Climate Crisis' (Hakibbutz Hameukhad; 2010) and The Power of Deserts: Climate Change, the Middle East the the Promise pf a Post-Oil Era' (Stanford U. Press 2020)

  • Practicum (internship) Seminar: Climate Change as a Civil Challenge (mandatory). Dr. Dov Khenin, former Member of Knesset (Israel's Parliament) and Head of its Environmental Protection Committee, currently Head of President's Yitzhak Herzog's Climate Forum, and Dr, Netta Galnur, CEO of President's Yitzhak Herzog's Climate Forum. As part of the Practicum Seminar each student will be assigned an internship with a government, civil society, industrial or financial organization whose work involves climate change. Interns will spend several  hours per week with their respective organizations, and write a final report assessing the organization's performance in climate mitigation and/or adaptation.

  • Climate Change and Water Policy Dr. Clive Lipchin, Faculty Member at the Arava Institute for Environmental Studies and Guest Lecturer at TAU's Porter School of environmental studies.  

  • Climate Change and Capitalism Dr. Rami Kaplan, Senior Lecturer, TAU's Department of Sociology and Anthropology and Department of Labor Studies.

  • Climate and Business  Prof. David Levy, U.Mass Boston.

  • My Climate Journey – A series of talks in which academics, students and activists are invited to share how Climate Change became a driver in their intellectual and professional trajectories. First Monday of each calendar month (Fall and Spring semesters). Eligible for credit as part of 'Colloquia Attendance').
