Applying for PhD Studies

Students seeking admission to the PhD program in the Department of Public Policy should apply for one of the tracks below.

1.Stage I Research Student

MA graduates from the thesis track from the Department of Public Policy or other relevant departments (economics, social sciences) from Tel Aviv University or any other CHE recognized institution of higher learning with a minimum final grade of 85 in their studies and a minimum final grade of 90 on their thesis may apply for PhD studies.

Tel Aviv UniversityDepartment of Public Policy graduates will be required to complete 8 credit hours with a minimum final grade of 85.

Students who are not graduates of this department will be required to complete 15 - 16 credit hours with a minimum final grade of 85, as determined by the department committee. (These hours include the 8 credit hours required by the research student regulations.)

 

Students who have been accepted to Stage I studies will contact an advisor and submit an approved research proposal by the end of the first year of studies.

At least two readers will evaluate all research proposals. At the end of the process, the department committee will decide whether or not the student may continue to stage II. These recommendations must be approved by the faculty and university research student committees.

2. Research Student Candidate

Despite the requirements determined above regarding supplementary courses for candidates or stage I research students, the Public Policy department PhD committee has the right to waive this requirement those cases when the student demonstrates unique experience and an impressive background in public policy.

MA graduates from the thesis track from the other departments with a minimum final grade of 85 in their studies and a minimum final grade of 90 on their thesis may apply for PhD studies.

Candidate Requirements

Candidates will be required to complete 15 - 16 credit hours with a minimum final grade of 85, as determined by the department committee. Candidates will also be required to write a thesis paper, and receive a grade of no less than 90.

At the end of the first year, the department committee will decide whether to accept the student to stage I.

3.Second MA degree

Students who have completed their MA in the non-thesis track with a final grade of 85 may apply.

Students in this program must complete two-thirds of the research track MA in the department of Public Policy with a minimum final grade of 85. These students must also complete an MA thesis with the minimum final grade of 90.

Once these requirements have been completed, the department committee will decide whether or not to accept the student as a stage I research student

When applying, the following documents need to be submitted to the students

  • BA and MA transcripts
  • MA thesis
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • CV
  • A  letter of intentions

Once the university authorities have approved the student’s acceptance, the student must register for PhD studies through the university internet site.

4. Stage II Research Students

Once the research proposal has been approved by the university authorities, students will progress to stage II. Students must submit their PhD thesis within five years of being accepted to stage I studies.

Once a year, students must submit a progress report, signed by the advisor, to the student office. The report will be forwarded to the department and faculty committees.

The PhD thesis will be submitted in Hebrew and/or English, and will include an abstract equivalent in scope to 5% of the entire paper.
