Crack: "Rock" Cocaine and 20th Century Capitalism/ by Prof. David Farber
For our final session of the year, we were delighted to host Prof. David Farber (University of Kansas) to discuss his recent book "Crack: Rock Cocaine, Street Capitalism, and the Decade of Greed" (Cambridge UP, 2019).Prof. Farber is a prominent historian of post-1945 America and has written numerous books on the 1960s and 1970s experience. We discussed racial and economic inequalities in 1980s America, along with Reaganomics and its legacies on inequality and the 2020 US election.

Conspiracy Theory and Culture in America / by Prof. Peter Knight
We were delighted to reconvene - even if only via Zoom - our faculty seminar in two weeks with a timely discussion about conspiracy theory and conspiracy culture in America led by Prof. Peter Knight (University of Manchester). Prof. Knight has written extensively about the topic and is a foremost expert on the role of conspiratorial thought in the American public imagination.

Prof. Kopstein examined student's stances on Israel and jews to infer if there is any correlation between the two overlapping subjects. Does anti-semitism inherently mean ant-Israel? Or are the two completely separated?

Cause for Concern? New directions in Jewish American attitudes toward Israel: A special conference 13/06/19
In collaboration with the American Jewish Committee (AJC) and the Stephen Roth Institute for the Study of Anti-Semitism at Tel Aviv University, the Center organized an event that explored the changing relations between American-Jews and Israel. This included: A presentation of the AJC’s annual survey regarding the attitudes of American Jews toward Israel, a panel of policymakers and academics who analyzed the survey’s results (this included the former Israeli Member of Knesset, Rahel Azaria, and Prof. Jonathan Karp of the State University of New York-Binghamton), a presentation of the Center’s Data Science Project, and a Q&A between Prof. Yossi Shain, The head of Tel Aviv University’s School of Government, and the Israeli Political Commentator Attila Somfalvi.

A Tribute to Phillip Roth Conference 04/06/19
To mark the one year anniversary of the passing of the American novelist Philip Roth, the Center collaborated with the Cymbalista Jewish Heritage Center at Tel Aviv University to organize a day-long public conference. Bringing together scholars, students and the general public, it celebrated Roth’s contribution to American culture through a wide range of events. These included: a screening of a documentary film about Roth, academic panels in which senior literary scholars presented papers about his work, a staged reading of excerpts from Roth’s works by actor Dror Keren, and a personal testimony by Roth’s longtime friend, Prof. Bernard Avishai (Dartmouth College).

Tel-Aviv University was proud to host the Vietnamese-American graphic artist and storyteller GB Tran as this year’s Yael Levin writer in residence. Tran is the author of the brilliantly drawn, innovatively composed and boundary-crossing graphic memoir, Vietnamerica (2011). The memoir follows the family’s turbulent journey through war-torn Vietnam to the US, as it explores the complex identity of a second-generation migrant-refugee who connects worlds and cultures in the attempt to suture familial wounds.

Special Guest Lecture: Prof. Lawrence Baron (San Diego State University)

It was a full house: dozens of students and faculty members from TAU's film school and American Studies Program came to hear Prof. Lawrence Baron talk about American-Jewish directors in Hollywood. From Elain May to Barbara Streisand and Lena Dunham, Baron explained how their Jewish identity and the experience of growing up in a Jewish immigrant family were expressed on screen through their cinematic works.

Chair of the FCC, Mr. Ajit Pai, held a rare Q&A session with our students and faculty from the department of Political Science during his official visit to Israel. Focusing on the challenges of regulating technological change, he talked about dilemmas of privacy, civil liberties and corporate responsibility while candidly addressing what the federal government can - and cannot - do, when it comes to the internet.

Special Guest Lecture: Prof. Steven Ross (University of Southern California)

Renowned historian Prof. Steven Ross (USC), visited the Center to give two lectures about his pioneering work on Jewish-American history and cinema. His first lecture, given in front of a public audience at Tel Aviv University, introduced themes from his recent book (a Pulizer Prize finalist) that surveyed the remarkable story behind Nazi plots against Hollywood and America in the 1930s. His second talk, with graduate students and faculty from the social sciences, focused on the historical relationship between politics and film in American history.
